Why Publish A Business Report?

Publishing my business report allows me to reflect back on the month to see what I did or didn’t do so well. Lastly, I have read blog income reports such as SmartPassiveIncome and I like to see what they have tried. It is a form of motivation for me and I hope that this can be one for someone else. Be sure to check out CashFlowDiaries for bloggers that share their blog income reports. Or one that I’ve recently found from publisher Microcosm Publishing.

September 2017 Business Report

Disclaimer: Any income reported will only be reported as “cash” in hand. If it did not deposit into my account, or if I didn’t cash a check, then it does not count as income. Additionally, income will only be reported for ApexThis business and not for personal income. I may discuss side hustles for additional side income, but only income in which I represent ApexThis will be counted.

Income/Investment Report

Investment – $0.00

Expense Report

RawVoice (Blubrry) – ($12)

Blubrry is a service I used to host the podcasts for Admins of Atlassian and ApexThis. It has built-in integration with WordPress making it vastly easier to upload and maintain the podcasts.

Google Apps – ($5)

I use Google Apps for email primary, docs and drive. It’s also great to use my Google account as authentication to other services and apps.

Google Domain Renewals – ($12)

Overall

  • Total Income/Investments – $0.00
  • Total Expense – ($29)
  • Total Net – ($29)

Hours Worked

Time Logged – 30h11m26s

What Happened?

Surprised

I’m actually surprised by the time I logged for the month of September. In August, I logged 11 hours of work for this side hustle. For September, I put in 30 hours and that excludes a lot of stuff. So let me explain:

Business

I spent 1hr for business stuff which was pretty much reviewing what I spent, or expenses I have upcoming and planning future stuff.

Podcast

20hrs this month was spent recording, editing, writing, and converting podcast episodes. What episodes?

  • August Update had 5h 43m 59s
  • Post Podcast Movement had 11h 01m 23s
  • YouTube video conversion had 3h 30m 41s

I’ve finally started to upload the podcasts to YouTube. They are simply the audio that includes a video waveform I created using the FFMpeg command line utility. Doing this has given me some ideas to play around with BUT the audio is being put there and as I refine my production process, I can do a bit more with the video as well.

Austin Podcasters

For September I also spent 2hrs 54m 16s working on the Austin podcasters meetup. This time does not include the actual meetup itself, just the work going into it beforehand. The time spent focused on website updates, writing a newsletter, and planning future events. Next will be working on a survey to see how I can improve the meetup for attendees.

Project Dollar

I haven’t announced the name of this project but I have mentioned that it is narrative, non-fiction related to budgets. It’s been something that I’ve wanted to do for a while. In the last monthly update, I mentioned how I kept struggling with the direction of this project and since attending Podcast Movement, I’ve decided to focus on writing this project for audio. Since making that change, I’ve been able to see the end goal for this project and everything is coming into view. Now it’s just writing as best as I can write. Recording as best as I can record. And producing as best as I can produce. And finally, learning from that experience to then move on to the fictional podcast idea I’ve been developing a story bible for.

What’s Next?

Write

I had a goal to write every day and I’ve been doing so-so at this. I can definitely kick this up a notch to make sure it is something I do. So here is my plan. Every morning I get up, take the dog out, perform my PT exercises, and then browse Instagram for what seems like 20 minutes before I begin to get ready for work. I’ve become addicted to checking Instagram and it sucks up too much of my time in the morning. Now, I block the app and it’s a good reminder that I should be using my time wisely in the morning hours.

Read Listen

One of the books I mentioned I would start reading was “World War Z” by Max Brooks. So, I changed this up. Instead of reading it, I decided to get the audiobook to listen to it. I thought this would be much better with my recent traveling and the decision was a good one. This audiobook has an all-star cast sharing their stories in the zombie war. Now, the audiobook is apparently the abridged version, so I will definitely be going to pick up the book itself to catch those missing parts. Even so, I still recommend checking out the audiobook. If you are interested, ad music, you can go to apexthis.com/audible to sign up for your free 30-day trial in which you get to pick up this book or choose your own to KEEP. That’s right, keep, and you can listen away on your daily travels or as you perform chores around the house. You can cancel anytime, but you keep your book. So, go to apexthis.com/audible Also, I must say, I also have the first four books of Malazan, Book of the fallen, and Ralph Lister, is amazingly good.

Learn

I’ve been watching countless videos, and how-to’s, for editing in pro-tools and adobe audition. I’ve watched people cut movies, show their editing workflow, mixing sound for movies, podcasts, and music. From digital to analog setups. Everything. I’ve been soaking it all in and attempting to re-edit and mix projects. In doing so, I found that my structure and organization wasn’t as good as I thought it was and I’ve made some improvements there. Next up, formal training sessions.
