I’m sure that you’ve heard of Lauryn Hill and if not, how long have you been under that rock?

This past Saturday night Ms. Lauryn Hill performed on PBS show “Austin City Limits.” During the hour-long set, Ms. Hill performed classics such as “Ready or Not” and “Doo Wop”. During the set, Lauryn reached further back and performed her rendition of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good”.

Why is this considered for a New Music post when you’ve obviously heard her music before? Great question.

Lauryn Hill likes to experiment with her music. She reaches across her repertoire and interchanges different styles into her songs so that you never get bored. She changes the arrangement of not just the instruments, but the vocals as well. One example is her performance of “Mystery of Iniquity” which is slightly faster paced and is backed by a fuller arrangement than just her lone guitar. This is quite different from the original performance on MTV’s Unplugged.
